The end of intermission was signaled by the faint but growing sounds of nature, occasionally interrupted by an ominous low tone. The rear-screen was subtly coming to life—dawn in an alien desert landscape, the sound and the video began to make sense. It all fit—not sure how—but at least the sound and the image aligned. And more importantly, it seized the attention of the forty thousand Rush fans in attendance. Suddenly, there was a flame in the distance. And then another. And another. “Dragons. It had to be dragons,” you could almost hear some lost man of Willowdale uttering sardonically. For a prog band who cut their teeth on fantasy, dragons seemed both fitting and serious. And then one flew to the foreground, seemingly breaking out of the screen, even without fans having Count Floyd’s 3d glasses (Dragonvision!). The beast sized up the crowd. It was all so legit, especially for prog-rock animation coupled with a foreboding soundtrack. And then—it pulled out a cigar. A cigar! Indeed, there was much to celebrate. Seems like a simple set up, but it was pulled off perfectly by the digital animation team Spin Productions. The cigar is lit, the dragon enjoys a deep inhalation, and then does what dragons do best—it started a fire—onstage!

The fire onstage was real and controlled, in large red columns across the entire backline, just a few feet behind Neil Peart. Fans in the first fifteen rows could feel its impressive heat (making us wonder how it felt onstage). Its ignition was perfectly timed with the cigar-smoking dragon’s exhalations. That first exhalation also ignited Peart’s blazing snare and double-kick intro for “One Little Victory,” the first song marking Rush’s return from darkness.
